Our Summer Poems

On Tuesday it was the last day we had Mrs Browne in our class. We talked about summer and came up with lots of ideas. We turned our ideas into acrostic poems which we published on the computer afterwards. Merry Christmas Mrs Browne, we hope you have a lovely break.

Last week a group of children from LZ19 participated in the Performing arts festival. We had two night shows and a matinee for some local schools.  It was great fun and an opportunity for the children to show off their talents in the choir, Korean and Chinese dances, line dancing and lots more.  Here are some of our photos.

Habitat Poems

We have been learning about New Zealand's natural habitats. We wrote some acostic poems about them.

Fresh air surrounding you
Over there are our beautiful native birds
Rivers for the birds to bath in and drink from
Each bird can safely lay their eggs
Safely the eggs crack
Tourists watch and take pictures of the lovely birds.

By Akira.

Twirling water with pebbles
Hitting the sand for food
Eating krill for lunch

Crying, I can see a little blue penguin
Opening the new coast at the zoo
Ate a huge lunch for a big journey
Swimming with a cute seal
Tweeting birds, you can hear

By Faadhil.

High country, there are lots of Keas
In the high country there are blue ducks and geekos
Geekos hide under rocks
High country is an elevated land

Calling out for fun
Only the parrot, Kea lived there
Uses rocks for homes
New Zealand's high country
The high country is in the south island
Rocks and shingle
Your High Country!

Night is a place of darkness
I love night
Giant dark sky
Hundreds of lights and rock
The best place for a kiwi

Persuasive Writing.

Should we have bubble gum at school?

Hello, I am going to talk to you about having bubble gum at school.
Firstly, I think bubble gum should be allowed in school because at lunchtime and morning tea when you and your friends get bored you can have a competition of who can blow the biggest bubble.
Secondly, all teachers think that kids stick their bubble gum around the classroom but we are all sensible enough not to do that.
Thirdly, most kids like bubble gum. Its tarty so why can't we have them.
Lastly, bubble gum should be allowed at school.
By Adi.

Should MHP have a pet day?

MHP should not have a pet day.
Firstly, we should not have pet day because our pets would go crazy and wild.
Secondly, where should we put our pets and they do not have anything to eat.
Thirdly, what should we do with them at morning tea and lunch time? Where should we take them when they need to go to the toilet?
Lastly, the pets will rip and mess up the room. Like cats they'll try to eat someone else's pet fish.
Therefore, we should not have pet day at MHP.
By William.

Should MHP have a pet day?

I think we shouldn't have pet day at MHP.
Firstly, there would be too much barking and other noises. We wouldn't be able to work because there would be too much noise.
Secondly, if by mistake a dog or bird got loose we would have to chase them around the whole school.
Thirdly, a student can be allergic to the pets that have fur.
Lastly, the dog might not like you or even a cat and they might hurt you. If something happened the teachers would never have a pet day again.
That is why I think its not a good idea to bring a pet to school.

Birds!

We spent our art session this week weaving the background to our bird. We then drew our bird onto black paper and then cut the inside out. The black paper was then put over top of our weaving. We now have a weaved bird! Check out our Penguins, Pukeko, Kiwi and Fantails.

Word Study

Velvet and Elvis

Today we went to the library to listen to 8Ci (from MHJC) talk to us about the long fin eel found only in NZ. They read us the story of 'Velvet and Elvis', then we got to see some 'REAL' eels, listen to the pollution response team, look at the tapestry eel and the model Kokopu fish. The eels were really cool!

RWC day at MHP!

On Friday 9th September it was our Rugby World Cup opening. We all had to dress as our rugby team colours. LZ19 got Argentina. We had a parade in the courtyard. The LZ's walked around with two flag bearers and when we got to the steps we had a class picture. Then we went back to our spot where we sat. There was a waka, it was made out of cardboard. Learning Zone one also did the haka.

After the parade we went to the courts. We had a challenge. We had to throw the rugby ball at the try. LZ19 versed Scotland, Georgia, Romania and England. LZ19 won against Georgia, Romania and England but we lost against Scotland. Scotland got sixty nine points and Argentina got sixty one points. We had to kick or throw the ball at the try.

After lunch we went to the hall for the presentations. South Africa and Italy did a dance. LZ19 fount out about Argentina. We went on the stage and we showed everyone our facts and pictures. And then we game the cup to the winners- South Africa and sung World in Union.

I enjoyed the day!

MLC Waka Challenge 2011

Today we launched our altered Learning Framework in the Middle School. Instead of it being in a circle the Middle School has chosen a waka to help us work through each piece of our learning.

As a Learning Community we got together in the hall to 'set the scene'. We were given this senario; we were a group out observing the habits of a Kakapo when the weather started to change. It was going to rain and we were going to get wet. We found 8 plastic bags and a roll of sellotape in our bag to make a raincoat.

We went back to class to follow the different steps: 'challenges', what challenges do we have? 'Focus', what are the jobs we need to do and what do we need to know? 'Solutions', what is our solution? 'Action', now lets make it. Next week when we are finished we are going to 'evaluate' our raincoats and learning.

We have had an awesome day creating our raincoats and we are not finished yet!

Check out our Wiki!

Hi LZ19,

I have set up a Wiki for you so that you can find all your favourite games that we have used for Maths and Literacy.  Also on the wiki are some links to websites for integrated studies; like the space ones we used last term and there are Native bird websites for this term.

Our Fabulous Rockets

We have finished our rockets and they are ready for our Rocket Exhibition tomorrow.

Pancake Day

Today the MLC watched Mrs Hutcheson give a demo on how to make pancakes. We then got to make our own one with our choice of topping. YUMMY!

Yummy Pancakes

1 cup of flour
pinch of salt
1-2 tablespoons of sugar
1 egg
¾ cup of milk

1. Put all the dry ingredients into a bowl.
2. Make a well in the middle and add the egg and milk.
3. Mix it all together.
4. When your pan has heated up pour ¼ cup of mixture into the pan.
5. When the pancake top is bubbling and the bubbles have popped flip it over to cook the other side.
6. Check the pancake so that you do not burn the bottom.
7. Add your favourite topping.

Enjoy your pancakes!

Bambi!

Over the week we have been presenting our prepared reading presentations to the class.  Victoria got to present hers at assembly this week. She used lots of expression and confidence when presenting Bambi to the Middle School.

Our trip to the Stardome Observatory

On Friday 3rd June, our class went on a class trip.  It was an exciting day.  We got to sit on a very comfortable chair and watched a 3D movie about our solar system.  We saw the eight planets. They are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Now Pluto is not a planet, it is a very cold place that you will be frozen.

Birkenhead Leisure Centre

When we became LZ19

Moving LZ10 to LZ19
On the move, no stopping
Very steaming hot in the sun
In the rain for 1 minute
No running with the stuff
Good- not good cause I had to do a lot
Day was hot
Aimee was doing good
Yes, We did it!!!

By Jeremy

Moving from one class to another
Our tables and chairs came too
Very heavy stuff
In the class, the classmates helped
Nearly everybody
giving help to other people
Did lots of work that was hard
A fun day we had
Yeah! What a hard day at work!

By Brenda

My class is moving form one class to another
Our class had a job for each person
Victoria was tired after we moved
I was moving wet day games with Megan
Nobody complained
Giving up time to move is fun.
Day was saying lots of jokes
Aimee was going fake shopping with baskets
Yah, we're all done!

By Ariel

Moved in April
One day LZ10 moved to LZ19
Very easy
Inside we moved the furniture
Helping in the morning
going backwards and forwards
Day goes well
A fun day
Yelling for someone to help.
